The History of the Psimians of Mu

The history of the Psimians is shrouded in mystery. Scholars’ conflicting conjectures are confounded by contradictory evidence compounded by mutual misunderstanding, mischievous misquotation and flagrant fabrication. Despite extensive research, Psimianists have to date not even established unequivocally what species the Psimians were, opinion being divided more or less equally between those who hold that they were humans, and those who argue that they belonged to a closely related species of telepathic primates. Both theories find their most persuasive arguments from otherwise hard-to-explain absences of evidence that the opposing theory would lead one to expect to find: on the one hand there are no physical remains which can be irrefutably identified as remnants of members of a non-human psimian species, and on the other there are none of the written materials which would have been left behind by any non-telepathic species with a culture as highly developed as this one. Both schools of thought claim support from the existence of widespread, shameless plagiarism of Psimian ideas by contemporary and near-contemporary humans*, the one presenting it as evidence of humans’ inability to independently produce material of this quality, and the other as evidence of a continuing human tradition to which the Lemurians were seminal contributors. A more obscure third school, a kind of scholarly lunatic fringe disingenuously trying to pass an outmoded conservatism off as the height of radicalism, argues that the non-existence of essential evidence reflects a similar essential non-existence of the Psimians of Mu themselves, and argues that the plagiarisers are in fact innovators; but few scholars today take such flamboyant and provocative controversialism seriously.
